Adult and Teenage Acne Treatments

We can help you manage and eradicate acne

Acne can be a painful, long-lasting and distressing condition, affecting the areas of the body that produce oily sebum; namely, the face, back and chest. It is characterized by red, pus-filled spots which either break out onto the surface of the skin or remain underneath, forming painful cysts.

Acne occurs when there is an increase in both keratin production, which forms the outer layer of the skin, and sebum production by the sebaceous glands. Together they cause a blockage to form in the pore of the sebaceous gland, providing an ideal environment for the proliferation of the bacteria Proprionibacterium acnes (or P. acnes) which normally lives harmlessly on the skin. The result is an infected, pus-filled spot. In teenagers, the increase in keratin and sebum is a result of the effect of increased testosterone during puberty, while adult acne appears to be related to other hormonal fluctuations or stress, which in itself causes hormonal fluctuations.

What is Acne?

Acne occurs most frequently at puberty, when the sebaceous glands and keratinocytes are stimulated by pubertal hormones to increase the rate of production of sebum and keratin respectively. The excess keratin cells can then quickly block the pores of the sebaceous glands, trapping the sebum below, which then solidifies. This creates an ideal breeding environment for bacteria which normally live harmlessly on the skin, especially the bacteria associated with acne, called Propionibacterium acnes (or P. acnes). This bacterium thrives in the anaerobic environment generated by the clogged pore, and by feeding off sebum.

The metabolic by-products of P. acnes inflame and destroy the wall of the hair follicles, allowing the inflammation to spread deeper into the tissues, causing infected spots which either erupt onto the skin or form painful cysts trapped below the surface.

Acne also occurs in adulthood, often due to imbalances in the androgen hormones, especially testosterone and DHEA, or from microcysts deep within the skin, the legacy of previous acne that was not effectively eradicated.

Recommended Treatments:

Paramedical Facial / Enzyme Skin Revision

Enzyme revision is a programme of intense facial treatments using bioactive pharmaceutical-grade ingredients to revise the skin and rebuild its health from the deeper layers. This is achieved by decongesting the skin, restoring its internal balance, and rebuilding the health of the underlying architecture, making it more resilient to structural damage. The acid mantle is then restored so that immunity to P. acnes is improved and the skin is protected.

ClearSkin Acne Laser Treatment

Heat and vacuum technology are used to treat all forms of acne vulgaris safely and effectively without injuring the surface of the skin. Laser energy penetrates into the deeper layers of the dermis, causing thermal damage to the sebaceous glands of the skin, destroying P. acnes bacteria and reducing sebum production, whilst leaving the epidermis intact. The integrated vacuum simultaneously extracts accumulated sebaceous material from the pores, while the cooling system ensures that the skin is protected from heat, minimizing discomfort. The appearance of scars is diminished over time by laser stimulation of collagen production.

Case Study: Bertie - a young man in his early 20's

Theresa and her team have been absolutely fantastic from the beginning, I can’t fault the service – I only wish I had heard about Andresa sooner. At the age of 20 my acne aggressively flared up, the university lifestyle after all isn’t the healthiest. I wanted to avoid using Roaccutane (the doctors only suggestion) due to the severe side effects until a friend introduced me to Andresa Aesthetics. The condition of my skin at that time really affected my confidence and made me unusually recluse. I’m now 21 and very happy to say only a year later of following Theresa’s personalised home skin routine, and with a few treatments along the way my skin is now completely clear with little to no scarring – which continues to quickly fade away (despite ignoring some of the dietary and lifestyle recommendations). Had I continued with over-the-counter supermarket products, I strongly believe I would still have severe acne scarring and awful skin. This has brought back my confidence and given a much-needed boost after endless lockdowns. The staff are all incredibly knowledgeable and always willing to answer any questions, even whilst treatments were closed due to the pandemic! I can’t thank Theresa and her colleagues enough for their outstanding work.

Case Study: Orla - a young lady in her early 20's

I’ve struggled with my skin on and off since I was around 16 when I first came to visit Theresa at Andresa. Now 24, I had just come off the pill and my skin took a turn. Combined with using products that weren’t right for me, it had never been so painful and irritated, and I had acne covering most of my face. I am so thankful that I reached out to Andresa at the lowest point when my skin started to affect my confidence – Theresa immediately put me on a new skincare routine and offered support, guidance and a clear treatment plan. Over the next few months, I had a series of Dermaquest peels and Clear Skin laser treatments that worked on transforming my skin from the inside out. Thanks to Theresa’s expertise and investment in my skincare journey, my skin is now looking the best it has in years. As someone who hasn’t had consistently clear skin since being a teenager, I couldn’t be more grateful for Theresa’s ongoing support and could not recommend Andresa enough!
