Charity of the year: DEBRA

Every year, we select a charity and hold fundraising events throughout the year to raise money for them.

DEBRA

DEBRA is the national charity that supports families and individuals affected by Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB). This is a genetic skin condition, affecting more than 5000 people in the UK, which causes skin to blister and tear at the slightest touch, causing painful, open wounds which in some cases can infect internal linings and organs. Infections and severe scarring can be extremely life-limiting, and it can be fatal in infancy.

DEBRA’s research objectives are to:

  • Improve the understanding of the biology and genetics of all forms of EB, in order to facilitate new approaches in diagnosis and treatment.
  • Develop gene therapies, cell therapies, drug therapies and protein therapies.
  • Further the understanding of the nature of wound healing and development of skin cancer in EB, and develop effective treatments and prevention strategies.
  • Improve the management of EB through symptom relief.
